The four choreographers behind Café Müller

Café Müller premiered in 1978 as part of a four-choreographer collaboration, though only Pina Bausch's section endures in memory today.

Café Müller premiered at Opernhaus Wuppertal in 1978. But the premiere featured more than one work.

Pina Bausch invited three choreographers to join her. Gerhard Bohner, Gigi-Gheorghe Caciuléanu and Hans Pop joined her.

A collaborative evening

The result was a four-part evening of dance. One part became the Café Müller we remember.

Today, Café Müller is known as Pina Bausch's masterwork. Few realize it began as one quarter of a collaborative program. The other three sections have faded from dance history while Bausch's contribution became iconic.
