Junko Tabei becomes the first woman to summit Mount Everest
In 1975, Junko Tabei survived an avalanche at her camp and continued climbing to become the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

The avalanche
During the climb, disaster struck when an avalanche hit their camp while Junko was inside. Her team pulled her out from the snow and debris.
Reaching the summit
Despite the life-threatening incident, Junko kept climbing. On May 16, 1975, she reached the summit of Mount Everest.
Junko Tabei became the first woman to stand on top of Everest, breaking barriers in a male-dominated field of mountaineering.
